You kneel in front of the lock on the doorknob, and take two picks out of the kit. Placing the first at the bottom of the lock as your lever pin, you turn it in the way that the key would go, if you had the key, of course. Resistance makes itself known as the barrel catches on the pins.

You then take the arced pin and slip it into the hole, using a slight up and down movement to test the pins until you find one that refuses to move as easily as the others.

Then, you go down the line, finding all of the seized pins and pushing them upwards until the lock gives way.

Gathering your nerves, you open the door.
