Hello hello!

Well, I'll be damned. You actually want to hear about the kind of music I like. Be warned, though, it is an aquired taste.

(also even though i consider myself a reasonably well versed music enjoyer, i'm not familiar with the terminology people use. feel free to correct me if i get things wrong!)

(another thing: apparently spotify links don't work on here, so i had to replace all the links with yt links. i hope you don't mind!)

Red Vox

Ah, yes! The only band (besides Talking Heads and Femtanyl) that I've listened through their whole discography! It's not just because I like Vinny as a streamer (though i am one to admit that he's a favorite of mine), but because they just have such an interesting sound to me. It's said on their official spotify bio that they don't stick to genre convention, and I absolutely agree. They do have a unique sound, and if anything Vinny always seems to become more confident in his vocals the more music they put out. I do feel it relevant to say that I consider them, alongside the likes of Joji and Lovejoy, to be one of the few examples of good youtuber music.

They've released either 5 or 7 albums depending on if you count Visions, Afterthoughts and Visions and Afterthoughts seperately, and a lot of their more influential or popular songs have been released as singles. My personal favorites are the combo of Visions and Afterthoughts, and Another Light. Go give those a listen if you have the time. Also, I would reccomend just avoiding Kerosene and What Could Go Wrong, it's just flat out not good. I know some people like it, but they were DNFs for me.

My favorite songs from Visions and Afterthoughts:

  1. Playing By The Rules
  2. Traces [tw: mentions of school shootings]
  3. Jumped The Gun
  4. Forgetter
  5. Eminence
  6. The Temple
  7. Visions and Afterthoughts

I would highly reccomend going to the official Youtube page and watching Afterthoughts there, the music videos are really interesting. Perhaps I'll write an essay on it later.

Go and sub to them on YT so they can actually make some damn money off of this here.

Oingo Boingo

If you know me personally, you know I have something called the 'Neurodivergent Pentagram'. This band here happens to be one of them, and for good reason! They've naturally managed to mix together the alternative stylings of the 80s as well as a healthy dose of ska, giving it a large variety of sound that simply pleases me. They've done a lot of things, but perhaps their most well known song is Weird Science, as it was featured in the movie of the same name. People do also tend to associate that song with Reanimator, but I personally feel like Dead Man's Party fits better. That's just my opinion, though :p

They've released about 10 albums, but I'm most familiar with Dead Man's Party and Only A Lad.

Go and check them out here.

Talking Heads

Talking Heads is a very unique case. Their most well known, and highly acclaimed album is Remain In Light, and I wholeheartedly understand. The combination of the synths, guitars, David Byrne's lyricism and indigenous instruments makes the album a very unique listen. The Great Curve is one of the classiest examples of this, layering multiple vocal tracks and a virtual sea of various instruments, and it all flows extraordinarily. I 100% understand why it's so higly rated on RYM, it is one of the most influential albums ever put out by them.

Probably known by most of you, there is a splinter band from them known as the Tom Tom Club, which made the song Genius Of Love. I, personally, perfer Wordy Rappinghood, but again that's just my opinion.

My favorite songs from Remain In Light:

  1. Crosseyed And Painless
  2. Born Under Punches (The Heat Goes On)
  3. The Great Curve
  4. Right Start
  5. Once In A Lifetime

Check them out here. Please, I insist!

They Might Be Giants

Ah, TMBG. I've always liked them, mostly because my mom always played them for me as a kid, but ever since I fully listened to Flood I really have fallen for them. My partner, Ax, is more into them then me, but I do appreciate their work. They have a very zany and upbeat style, while still not straying away from more subdued subject matter and styles. The best example of this is Lie Still, Little Bottle, an entire song that sounds like proto-barber beats but is entirely about a man fighting his internal demons. My personal favorites are Flood and the self titled album They Might Be Giants.

They've released 27(!) albums and I certainly haven't listened to them all, but I will in the future. Maybe.

Go and have a listen here.

Femtanyl

Girl music at its finest! Femtanyl is known for their notably gory and up front lyricism (yes, there are lyrics) to their breakcore hits, and I love them all! The sheer agression displayed in every song is simply something to die for, and even if you can't understand the lyrics it's still a testament to pure emotion. Their cutesy sona on the covers of the singles contrasted with gore and car batteries and general viscera is always a sight to see, and it lends added imagery to the songs within. It can be a hard listen to the unaccustomed, but after having a look at everything you get used to it.

They've released 13 singles, and each is incredible in it's own way.

My favorite songs from Femtanyl:

  1. KATAMARI
  2. ACT RIGHT
  3. DOGMATICA
  4. S33K H3LP
  5. DINNER!
